How about trying a hard effort for a lap and a half, then cruising for a lap and a half , then gradually over time build up those longer efforts to 2 laps, etc ? and maybe trying to do some shorter sprints at the end of the lap or a at a suitable point during it ?
( sure the qualified coach will be along in a minute to say I'm talking shite )

That's what I was wondering .. if it was longer efforts I needed to work up too or work on shorter ones then work back up
I'm always breathing heavy on hills!
Also pretty sure it's not very helpful breathing like that! LOL
