We were watching the stage about 3kms further on from where the big crash happened and it was amazing (and quite horrific) to see the state of the riders going past. Some were getting bandages put on from team cars whilst on the move. We cycled down the col where the accident happened before the Tour came through and it was a pretty steep decent - oil or not, it was enough of a scary decent for Gobi to caution me to slow down and to claim the particular hairpin was "an accident waiting to happen". I took a few iPhone pics of the riders with about 24 kms to go on today's stage (just after the crash): facebook.com |

the problem is that you have a big peleton hitting sections where in the the single day races, they are often whittled down to 60-80 riders. On the pave in paris Roubaix, it's one long line that snaps constantly under the pressure of racing. The pressure and speed is not the same on the tour, so the peleton stays together and then you get too many bodies for too little road, add rain, and riders not normally used to pave e.g Contador and the spaniards and you have an interesting recipe. where are you two off too tomorrow? best thing I can remember from the tour about protests was a young Hinault punching french farmer (I think?) who blockaded the road, back in the 80's. Man! he was a mean fecker!

Cancellera is very astute considering his team leader was one of the worst affected by the crash & it certainly did Cav a favour.

Cancellara is an amazing rider, but he comes across as a bit of a bully, and Hushovd definetly has a point about Cancellara making the decision. There was a stage last year where Cancellara went mental at I think Evans for Evans getting himself in a break group. Cancellara wasn't happy because there would be no way the leaders would let a group with Evans in get far down the road. I think it's a bit silly neutralising the stage. There's loads of time for all sorts to happen in this race. The Giro was peppered with crashes early on with lots of riders losing time, but then managing to make time back at various other points in the race. |
