I don't think Cancellara would have had any sway at all if the other big names hadn't backed him. Clever stuff really by Sportacus letting the Armstrong/Contador group catch up then effectively saying "well you have to wait for Schleck, I waited for you", as for the sprinters, well I guess they realised 3 weeks is a long time if you start making enemies of the other teams

true duffer, but it must have been chaos out there for them, so they just eased up. riding over the line was poor form tho'.
I remember a guy telling me a story in the tour sweden back in the 80's when Hinault was riding in his last year. some soviet amateurs were riding and took off at the start hard. Hinault rode to the front swore at them and said if you want to ride hard? then let's ride and he took off with his hands behind his back, put everyone in the gutter for kilo and swung over swearing at the russians, they did not do it again. My mate fought for 5k to get back into the bunch!!
There are generals in the peloton, that you don't mess with.
