I can see why they waited to regroup the peloton, especially with both Schlecks in the crash and Cancellara at the front. But I don't really see the point of not contesting the sprint. It wouldn't affect the overall standings.

It was a protest at the stage being too dangerous apparently.

Nellers - I can't be sure he wouldn't waited even if the Schlecks were with him as there is a lot honour in cycle regarding crashes and not attacking (especially if the yellow jersey crashes).

The commentators were scathing about it on ITV that pointing out in 1910 they didn't even have surfaced roads and saying that tomorrows stage with the cobbles is likely to be worse. Armstrong in his twitter feed and radioshack web page interview seemed to indicate it was an unusally bad day for crashes, and I think they lost their appetite for further ones, but it was a bit odd. Vaguely remiscent of the day they all sat down and protested about the Festina team being busted for drugs many years ago - like they'd have a point if this wasn't part and parcel of what they already do.

I've seen similar before but I'm talking back to the 80s. Surprised that, given the prize involved and the way the world has changed, that ethos still exists.

Pleased, but surprised.

Nellers the cycling code has its down sides too, such as the Omerta for certain things such as drugs taking and anyone, such as Kimmage, will be vilified forever for daring to be honest about it.

Yeah, it's a sort of "honour amongst thieves" kind of thing, isn't it?

The whole culture of Cycling, professional cycling in europe at least, is a pretty unhealthy and unedifying one in many ways. Why do I still often find it so compelling? I guess there is another side to it, though, isn't there?

Just caught the Eurosport re-run. It seems that it wasn't just ITV that missed it by going to the ads. Big oops, there, for the (presumably) french director.

I think they just missed it as it was on a narrow corner and there wasn't a camera near at the time.
