So Contador will likely not be able to defend his title again? Oh I really wish the UCI would stop pussy footing around. Contador has been rumoured dodgy for years (indirect links in Operation Puerta), his time trialling going from average to better than Cancellara - a speciallist time trialler looked highly suspect and in cycling, it it looks to good to be true, it usually is. The clenbuterol failure despite his argument on meat is dodgy on two grounds - one they also found plastics in his sample (likely from blood bag) and two the "contaminated" meat came from Spain which has banned clenbuterol in its cattle for many years, so unless they were illegally doping their cattle (possible), that defence doesn't have merit either. He failed the test, both samples, suspend him, and let him prove his innocence. This isn't innocent until proven guilty. This is guilty and now he needs to show that there is some reasonable doubt.

I'm really disappointed in this. I'd so love to believe that cycling is clean and people like Contador and Schleck are genuinely better than everyone else. Like all other sportspeople it should be zero tolerance, they know the risks and need to be super careful what the put into their body. |

With all the doping in ALL sports it would not be a surprise whoever gets caught, runners, cyclists, skiers, it's just a bit sad when it's one of the so called greats.

There are lots of sports that can learn a lot from cycling rather than turning a blind eye.

"""There are lots of sports that can learn a lot from cycling rather than turning a blind eye.""" Au contraire, cycling's ability to brush doping matters under the carpet is truly remarkable. As always, good analysis, and follow-up comments, from the Sports Scientists on Contador. http://www.sportsscientists.com/2011/02/contador-is-cleared-verdict-not.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+blogspot%2FcJKs+%28The+Science+of+Sport%29# *Maybe* Contador didn't dope. But I don't see how he could have established that, with the necessary degree of confidence, for the Spanish Federation to reach this verdict. Especially since they originally "proposed" to find him guilty and ban him - what is it Contador could possibly have provided in the last 10 days that he didn't in the months and months previous, to overturn that "proposal"? |

a whooping big legal bill for the federation... if they persisted.

As posted in the other thread. The only thing they found him guilty on was strict liability hence the initial one year ban (If found guilty of deliberate doping it would have been a two year ban). However if if could prove he wasn't negligent then there is a UCI clause which would mean no ban.
