Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

For those doing a spring marathon... How has your training REALLY gone?

I follow lots of other runners on Instagram. Yesterday it felt like all of their posts were about their wonderful 18 milers. Congrats to them if they did that and I'm genuinely happy for them.

We all know social media can sometimes paint a fake picture of life though and sometimes other things get in the way of training. So let's consider this a safe space and keeping it real thread - how has your training really gone? Have you skipped any sessions / weeks? Did you bonk on an important run? Are you feeling woefully underprepared?

Did you do your last marathon off barely any training, yet somehow survive?!

This thread is by no means to make me feel better about myself after only managing 13 miles on the weekend when the plan called for 16. Nope, not at all 🙊

I can make you feel better, although I don't have a spring marathon coming up.

Instead, I have a spring 50 mile ultra coming up.

My longest run has been 13 miles, and that was in Jan.

I am going to die a thousand deaths.

A combination of ice, a nasty lingering cold, life 'stress' and absent mojo has curtailed any serious training.

One 30 mile race has already been deferred to next year.

The only saving grace is that my ultra is an LDWA event, so I have very generous cut offs and will be well fed as I haul myself round.

Do report back after your marathon, I'll do the same!

I did my only marathon in December off barely any training after suffering kidney failure in May, sciatica in June and Achilles tendinopathy in August and September.

I survived the experience but had to spend much time locked in various portaloos and walked rather a lot.

I actually feel really proud of myself for finishing and have even entered the same event this year. I would prefer to be able to do the training this time. Not having explosive diarrhea would make it a perfect day out.

How do I feel?

I've done enough of them to know its going to hurt, a lot!

A little nervous I guess, but I should make it round, just not as quick as I'd like.

Abundant but slow. And at the point you're at pre-marathon, @SilentTim, my longest run was 13 miles.

Also, that's reassuring about your 13!! I do have plans to do an 18 and 20 in the next few weeks though, so all is not lost!

@fetcheveryone re the bottom graph on that page - is it me, or is it a bit difficult to interpret? I feel like it would be better if along the bottom you had common distances like 10, 13, 16, 18, 20, then the Y axis was how many of each of those you / the group had done?

Also @fetcheveryone - I'm really intrigued that you are USER3 - who were the first two?!

I've done a couple of 11 mile runs but have had a few calf niggles recently. I cannot remember the last time, I went through marathon training without getting ill or injured in some way.

On the positive side, 11 miles is a few miles more than I have managed on a long run since Covid-19.
