Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

Wtnmel. My wife bought me a turntable about 8 years ago. I had one previously but the belt disintegrated. Playing it is a rare thing but it has pride of place in the bedroom. Every time I play an lp from my yoof it cheers me up and takes me to that place. We plan to downsize in December and it will be a struggle to find a place for all this stuff....
My 78s are very few. Mainly bought in charity shops, because I had a means to play them.

WtnMel, thanks for your advance good wishes, for my 10k later this year.

I no longer do the cryptic crosswords, just the i concise one.

We have an excellent cafe in the village, which has an extensive collection of LP's and 45's for sale. They also buy them from customers. All my LP's are in the loft, but I won't sell them, as one day I hope to buy a record player. All my 45's are in my writing bureau. I have an extensive collection of CD's and cassettes.

It's always a good idea to investigate on eBay what prices the LP's are being offered for sale.

Aquarius, you are correct, my friends were unavailable to run; Sarah F and Mike still away, but due back at the end of the week. Sarah H has been suffering with a nasty cough and cold. I didn't fancy going to the parkrun on my own, especially as the weather was awful.

I'm sorry to hear that you are still having stomach problems, and hope that you soon feel better.

0061, I don't have any 78's these days. The only ones that I can remember having are 'Sparky's Magic Piano,' and 'Teach Yourself French'.

I can still play my CD's in the car, and in my Boom Box.

I ran a hilly 6.36 miles on roads with Giuliana on Sunday, but had a rest day yesterday, as I had run 33 mies in the week, which is the most for quite a few weeks. Today was the usual Tuesday Farmers Walk.

I ran an easy pace 3.94 miles on roads this morning with Sarah H, who is recovering from a cough and cold, and me 'nursing' an aching right knee. I will probably take a couple of running rest days, and walk briskly instead.

OO61 - my 78's came from a friend from when I was at college around 1970. His parents bought a greengrocers and they were in the shed out the back. There was no selection - he just gave me the top half of the pile :)

Hillstrider - I decided as a lot of my lp's have been superseded with cd's or downloads, I might as well replace the rest I want to keep. Like OO61, I enjoy playing the music from my 'yoof' - but I don't have any plans to buy a turntable. I wouldn't know where to put it either if I did! I was going to check lp prices on Discogs (and probably Amazon/Ebay as well) before going to see the guy at the record shop. Well done re the 6.3ml run at the weekend and today's 4ml run - 33 miles is a great mileage for a week.

Margaret and I went to Charlecote today (on the way to Warwick) and had a muddy walk around the grounds. It was my first walk for over a week, thanks to a sore left foot, and my feet seem to be okay tonight, which is good news. We only did just under 2mls - might have been further if some paths hadn't been closed due to waterlogged conditions in places.

Glad the foot is better Wtnmel I bet you enjoyed the walk. My turntable sits under a window in the bedroom. Doesn't take up too much space or look out of place. I guess it depends how big your house is. When we downsize it will be one of many headaches...
Sorry about the knee hillstrider, mine is sore too and affecting my training but can't see the physio for a couple of weeks.

HS I see we are back to being the "RW Mature Runners aka the sore knees" thread, or in WtnMel's case the sore foot thread. I hope your sore knee improves after your couple of running rest days. It's also my right knee that bothers me when I run, particularly on downhill sections. That was excellent mileage last week, well done.

0061 I know you've mentioned a sore knee previously, but can't remember if you said it was your left or right?

It's a bit of a worry when you can't be sure what's caused it and whether continuing to run on it is a good or bad thing. Steve was told he has arthritis (basically wear and tear) in his knee and the orthopaedic surgeon said he should keep running as that helped to lubricate the joint, but I suppose if the soreness was as a result of a strain to the knee joint resting would be the better option. Some months ago a physio told me my knee joint seemed fine in itself and the likely cause of the soreness was due to my knee over compensating for tight quads. I was a bit skeptical as I always stretch before and after runs, however having had my quads well and truly massaged my knee did feel better. I think my current soreness is a result of turning a corner on a steep downhill a bit too tightly a few weeks ago, but who knows - maybe it's the quads again?

WtnMel I can remember playing old 78s as a child on our radiogram, an enormous piece of furniture that contained a turntable as well as a radio. I can also remember playing the pianola at my grandmother's house - The Wedding of the Painted Doll and (I think) The Trish Trash Polka, amongst others. By rights I should have legs like Arnie as it took a lot of strength to work those pedals. I hope your foot is still behaving itself.

Talking of strength, my gym visit on Tuesday went well. The trainer demonstrated each piece of equipment first then I did a few sets myself. It was a little challenging, but quite achievable and the hour passed really quickly. We finished with me walking/jogging forwards dragging a weight behind me along the mat, then going backwards pulling the weight towards me. That felt surprisingly good, the trainer told me all runners love that exercise. I haven't booked a further visit yet, but probably will do.

The weather hasn't been great for running this week, but managed 6 miles on Monday, despite sleet (took the rest of the day to thaw out) and went up to Blackhill Park for 7 laps of the hill. Yet again snow is forecast for tomorrow, so keeping fingers crossed that it comes to nothing.

WtnMel, good news that your feet were ok during a 2 mile walk.

0061, thanks. I'm sorry to hear that you have a sore knee too.

Aquarius, I'm sorry that you also have sore right knee. I see that Steve has arthritis in his knee. Depending on how painful it is, depends, in my opinion what opinion to take, is perhaps a bit of each.

Well done for Tuesdays gym session, and Mondays 6 miles.

The usual Friday Farmers Walk this morning, but not sure whether I'm parkrunning or not tomorrow. I will be running though.

No walking as yet - but we were staying at the Holiday Inn in Aylesbury last night and I managed to fit in 40 lengths of the 20m pool (800m) before we ate. And I resisted the temptation of a beer with my meal - partly due to them charging around £7 for the privilege.

Sorry to hear about the sore knees affecting you all ..

Aquarius - glad to hear the gym visit went well and well done re the recent training.

Hillstrider - well done re the farmer's walk. Will wait to see whether its parkrun or another run you do tomorrow.

That's expensive beer Wtnmel. That's a good swim. Same for me yesterday- 1700 meters at the local pool. There was an incident with a group of abusive lads which resulted in the police arriving to arrest one of them.

It's the left knee Aquarius. I can still train but it's slowing me down. Whitley Bay parkrun is back today. I'm volunteering, then taking part in the Singals relays. A 2.2 mile leg in the v50 team.
Hope you decide to parkrun hillstrider.

WtnMel, well done for the swim. Is the pool in the Holiday Inn? Where abouts in Aylesbury is the Inn? As I've mentioned before, I used to live in Aylesbury and my daughter still does. I can't remember a Holiday Inn when I lived there. £7.00 for a pint, I'm not surprised that more people are going tea-total and pubs are closing in their hundreds.

I decided not to parkrun, see my post below.

0061, well done for your swim. Would you have swum further if the police hadn't been called? I presume that everyone had to vacate the pool when they arrived?

I hope that your knee 'held up' during your Signals relay race?

I decided not to parkrun, as mentioned in my post to Mel above.

I ran 12k this morning with Sarah H. I could have parkrun, but Sara, who is struggling with Huntingdons Decease, didn't want to. I said that I would run with her, as she means a lot me. Her mother also had it, so passed on the gene. Sarah knows what lays ahead, so is trying to keep running for as long as she is able.
