I agree with you JB. Harris is far from the lesser of two evils, she is by far the best choice of the two available candidates. But she is still not as good as the US and the rest of the world deserves or potentially needs.

If this were a normal election, I'd have a lot of sympathy for the argument that it's necessary for democratic health for people to be able to vote for exactly who they want to, who best matches their politics. But it isn't. One of the candidates, the slight favourite, is effectively promising to end democracy and replace it with an autocracy. Of course, like all autocracies, there will still be elections but they will be sham elections where everything is rigged so the dictator is overwhelmingly voted back in by the adoring people.

I still don't see that Trump is "promising to end democracy and replace it with an autocracy". He is definitely tilting the balance away from some democratic norms, but still will be constrained by the rest of the US political system. There is a *risk* that he abuses power in a very dramatic form, but I still don't quite see it.

Some more stuff on third-parties and their voters. theguardian.com The devil's advocate in me wonders how poor Harris is if - like unable to gain the Washington Post nomination - she's struggling to beat a man who threatens to end US democracy and perhaps end the world. |

Are you aware of social media bubbles and echo chambers and polarization and cognitive bias? There have been numerous studies about how the US is now really two countries - each with it's own reality Few things makes the crossing between the two realities. Listen to The Coming Storm podcast or Marianna Spring's latest series about the US and social media. And unfortunately it is coming here, although not so completely yet. |

Just because he is terrible doesn't mean she might not be poor. Neither of them really embody that presidential attitude; she doesn't come across (to me) as well as Hillary did.

In unrelated news, I'm surprised there hasn't been a clamour here for the arrest and imprisonment of the ringleaders of Just Pump Oil for their latest stunt. |
