Actually Evenepoel's Vuelta was precisely a case of not 'racing'. Racing is exactly how he'd get into trouble.

He'd be perfect for Ineos actually.

Also Evenepoel wouldn't be avoiding anyone, he'd be following the plan set out for his own development. Everyone knows the TdF is the ultimate goal.

So a TdF might still be on the cards between the four or five generational talents around at the minute. Maybe not 2023 or 2024 but it could yet come if they all look after themselves.

And if they end up with different racing styles, maybe all the better.

At a bike shop that is also a coffee shop in Plymouth, which has cycling memorabilia and bikes on the walls.

Dropping this here (as well as in the 'cycling for noobs' thread):

I've done my second 50 miler (details in my blog if you're interested). I found this one harder, both physically and mentally. There was some wind to contend with this time around, BUT I am mostly thinking about the elevation profiles:

The data isn't madly accurate (unless my house really IS sinking), but you can get a flavour of both routes.

Garmin gave both routes a total elevation gain of ~520-530 metres. So how could I go about quantifying the degree of difficulty, based SOLELY on the elevation data I have? How would you do it?

How about something along the lines of "time spent climbing" or "minutes at gradient > 3%"? Wouldn't tell the whole story, but might be a compent part of it.

The 'hillscore' figure in the dark bar above each profile is

Σ (hill_distance * hill_gradient) /1000

Both routes scored 39.

And how about climbs after half way count double? And maybe even climbs after 3/4 count x4 ? It does look like Ride 1 gives you a final 16 minutes of 'easy' riding. (I know there was 34 miles before that though).

And linking to larkim's thoughts, something on 'time spent freewheeling' or 'cycling but with no real effort'.

Of course, it might actually be that both rides were equally hard!

I'm sure you've come across them before, but there are a couple of formulaic approaches here.
