Having never done it before, I was wondering if there is any general advice on how to plan it? For the stages, do you stay on the side of the road the night before? If we went to a Time Trial, which tend to start/finish in towns, do you book a hotel for those, or park the van somewhere and travel in? Very generally, how early do you have to get to the stages to get a reasonable spot and how early are the roads closed? Is something like Alpe d'Huez pretty difficult to get to in terms of getting a decent spot? Lots of questions, but any tips would be most welcome (I have posted the same question to the Pro Cycling thread so apologies if some of you see this twice).
