To MiL's immense credit, she produced some sort of 'meat-free loaf' for her. I wouldn't have bothered had it been me but then she always did annoy me ]

It is, after all, only a 45 minute drive for me. (And a 5 minute drive for you). It's perfectly fine for you to suggest a change of plan and then not follow it up, I've nothing else to do. And while we're on the subject, why is it ALWAYS me doing the travelling?
