"So you can fill up water bottles for the journey for free..? "
Yes.
I've never paid to fill up a water bottle!

But did you have to pay for food / drinks in the cafes you used?
If you can just walk in there and ask for water bottles to be filled then that's worth knowing, but I suspect that many would baulk at the idea if you weren't a paying customer.?

There's a 'fill your water bottle here' point at Chelmsford station certainly.

Well I'd say it's unusual not to get through security and sit down and have a cup of tea or something at some point.
But I think I've asked in the past at Leeds Bradford for them to fill up a water bottle at a quiet time and they've happily done it for me.

We usually take through a packed lunch. That's my Yorkshire parents for you...
Might buy a cup of tea - probably wouldn't sit in any cafe though - not allowed to eat your packed lunch in their seats...!

Fair point.
At East Midlands Airport I had a pint of Castle Rock Harvest Pale after we went through security. It wasn't free though.
