OK, maybe it's a song thrush. Young blackbirds are very speckled, though, much more like song thrushes than the adult birds.

HowFar?
Thrushes do seem susceptible to flying into windows. I had a stunned one outside the kitchen for most of the morning last week, after it flew into the window and we had a spate of them crashing into the hall windows at school.

There were 5 herons at the Erne estuary last night. I don’t think I have seen that many next to each other before. Also more mullet in one spot than I have ever seen. It was like one of those trout stock ponds when they throw the pellets in.

It’s tricky at the estuary because although I want to look all around me, I also have to keep on eye on my feet to make sure I am not about to tread on a jellyfish or crab. It can get quite exhausting.

I was walking back to where I had locked my bike and nearly trod on a small scampering thing. It ran about near my feet for a few seconds before regaining its composure and heading for the undergrowth. It looked smaller than a mouse so I think it was a shrew, but it was too dark and it was moving too quickly to get a good look at its nose.

HowFar? - scampering over feet? I've known moles do that, not mice or shrews.

Ref the kite questions a few days ago. I spotted a pair gliding along earlier today.

All in < 1 minute, then they were gone ...

Fabulous pictures, um. The scampering was not over my feet, just panicked loops near my feet. No moles over here, so it definitely wasn’t one of those.

Thanks twitchers , my first thought was a thrush of some sort . It had a small amount of blood around it’s beak, we haven’t had many blackbirds around lately but have many sparrows who have nested in a few places .
