I was assuming some trusted friend not a random punt off a website. 50 quid seems fair ;-)

SPR wrote:Ah ok, thought you were expecting an issue with this specific spike. What were you running in before? I run in zero/ low drop TBF so spikes don't generally give me any extra issues although lower legs can be general thing I have to watch from an overload point of view.

My typical shoe is either Brooks Launch GTS or Brooks Adrenaline GTS which are 10mm and 12mm drops. These spikes were negative drop, and stiffer than my worn out previous spikes.

After I posted this yesterday, i did a 6m run last night in the 12mm drop shoes, and there was a little feeling in my calves from the Saturday race, but still a lot less than I would have feared; I've definitely run track races in the summer in the past and had more next day discomfort than these gave me. Probably nothing at all to do with the shoe, and everything to do with my current level of fitness.

I can't imagine running in 12mm drops these days. I think the max among any shoes I have is 8mm, and most are between 0mm and 5mm.

When I got the Adrenalines I did find them odd to run in. I'd not looked at the heel drop, just bought them because the blurb talked about them being a good easy / long run shoe and I wanted to try something different to the Ravenna / Launch GTS that I'd used for a long while. I do enjoy them now though for those easy runs, but I'm also not entirely certain I would be able to tell the difference between 10mm and 12mm.

I bought from a clubmate for £20 a pair of Endorphin Shift 2, not realising they were only 4mm drop. I honestly couldn't have told you that they were lower, though I did find them a little different to run in (I put that down to the firmness at the front); I don't think I am particularly well in tune with how things fit on my feet.

You never said what your previous spikes were larkim

Your calf and Achilles would definitely be getting stretched a lot more than usual if you run in 12mm.

There was a time I couldn't run in 6mm. Funnily enough it was track that made that feel weird. Can run in up to 6mm now (the Takumi Sen are 6mm) but would't go for anything higher, although I have heard that the soft foam of supershoes makes their stack feel lower so maybe I will in the future.

Old ones were Adidas distancestar I think. Again, just bought the first pair that were LD and cheap at the time. Mainly used them for XC but done a few track races in them too.

Looks like there's a Dragonfly 2 Elite in testing on the WA shoe DB.

larkim the new Rival Distance is similar to the Dragonfly with standard cushioning and may be something that works well for you given it has more cushioning.

Ran 4:24.76 for 1500 yesterday in the dragonfly spikes (PB is 4:24.00) and today ran 11.4 miles. The spikes just seem to lead to less muscle damage from racing and I actually was a bit too fast for the first couple of miles as legs felt good but slowed down as the reality of where I was overall from an energy/ fatigue standpoint set in. Obviously being able to train more, presuming it doesn't lead to overtraining should lead to good outcomes.

Ran in the Takumi Sen 9 today at the Masters Relays, was in an incomplete team so thought it was worth testing them as I probably wouldn't ever do it if I didn't there. I also thought they'd save my legs a bit. I'm not convinced they saved anything over my standard flats as I'm absolutely cooked. I can feel my quads more than I ever remember after a race and I don't think there was anything gained speed wise which fits with my testing pre March/ April relays. I suppose quads will in theory be quicker to recover than lower legs so there may be a benefit overall and that may simply be related to it being higher drop that I've worn for races for more than a decade.

Obviously not saying this is universal as it's a shoe with WRs so it obviously works for some.
