I think I paid about £90 for my Hoka. If they are 1/30th as effective as the Nike then they should have been in the range £7-£10 shouldn’t they 😬?!

16 runners is probably a bit of a silly sample size unless you're very confident that the results are highly consistent and repeatable between people.

But I'll take that 3.8% anyway thanks :-)

(not quite but I'm closer to that than the next speed up)

I definitely notice that the faster I run in my Saucony Endorphin Pros, the more benefit I get from them, so it's not specific to the Nikes. I suspect that the more you do forefoot striking as you go faster, the more you benefit from 'bounce' which propels you forward.

I just noticed this headline, as an example of where all this leads: "New Adidas running shoe breaks multiple world records to show Nike Vaporfly NEXT% who's the boss", from https://www.t3.com/news/adidas-running-shoes-break-multiple-world-records-to-show-nike-zoomx-vaporfly-next-whos-the-boss. The shoe, not the runner. OK, it's a gear site, but still!

Well the whole point is the shoe can now make more of a difference than the difference between runners so this is what will happen.

I've said multiple times that this would have been looked at a lot differently if Kipchoge had been an Adidas runner when the Nikes emerged. Even in the track world it's looked at a little differently because of Bolt and he's retired!

Re the research on different shoes, confirms my thoughts that just because everyone has a 'supershoe' doesn't mean they've matched Nike.

I don't like that patents can lock in advantages.

Looks Asics have done a decent job.

I suspect Adidas have as well as I believe the rods are essentially a way to get the correct shape without running into patent restrictions.

Disagreeing isn't necessarily raging...

smh.com.au

“It’s weird and unfair for a lot of athletes because I know that in the past [shoe companies] actually tried and the governing body said, ‘No, you can’t change the spikes’. So to know that now they are actually doing it, it’s laughable.”

Seems pretty reasonable view to take. I think everyone was under the impression the Nike's were illegal and it would make sense that they were told they weren't allowed. Nike's position in the sport meant they could just do it without asking and then let the world react.

The 16 runner study was limited due to cost and availability of shoes yet remains one of a very small study sample size. In the report, they claim to be advocating for brands to make shoes available for 3rd party testing so that altheletes can make an informed choice. The small testing sample indicate that some plated shoes are not giving a perfomance advantage over a control shoe, yet still demand a premium price.

I don't know how feasible it is to test before release but some sort of standard ramp / vVO2MAX / LT testing by governing bodies would be welcome as a baseline. - Thinking as I type, that would probably never happen due to sponsorships etc
