SPR, I knew about the different strategies too. It's just that I don't know which one I favour! In fact, I may even favour different ones at different times.

Hi SPR - apologies, I’m being flippant and my comments were based on some video of me at various stages of a marathon (Valencia 2018), rather than any deliberate strategy change mid-race. The video supported my ‘feeling’ that I tend to start relatively ‘on my toes’/forefoot as I deliberately hold back, until I get relaxed after 5k or so and drop into my cruising cadence which appears longer and more midfoot; as I tire I definitely start to heel strike and I deliberately shorten my stride to try to hold pace. Yep you’re correct, no watch for me so it’s all guesswork by me really.

I’m not anti tech but I’m now 60 years old and I’m enjoying my running. I don’t want to spend the next few years raging against the dying of the light.

That said, I saw a pair of endorphin pro’s at £160 and thought, what the hell!!

I think it's a bad strategy (two models of shoe) and one of them will get binned when they see 80% of people just want as much foam as is legal.

Hard to get faster runners away from VF now and runners who are hesitant to switch need convincing evidence that the shoe they are taking on works, and might also base their decision on price.

Next%2 are priced at 210 which I feel is a small concession to the rest of the market catching up and undercutting them a bit.

SS - I simply thought that you had been watching my marathon performances! Those periods towards the end of the marathon where I tend to have to consciously heel strike to avoid cramping might benefit from a change of shoes!

As we advance in years let's take the help we can get. I guess that I'm faster than I otherwise would be in the supershoes but I know that I benefit from the damage limitation they provide. I bought my 70 year old dad some 4% and he loves them....hope you enjoy the saucony.

Lol at the shoe change. It might actually start happening if it can be proved the time lost changing is more than gained back.

J2R - I'd base it on information from different distances. I have avg cadence and stride length data from 800 up to 10000 plus training data at different speeds.

Beth Potter ran 14:41 at podium 5k in ASICS Metaspeed Sky tonight, taking 40+ secs off her previous time there last year

I think it's pretty clear now that these new shoes provide such an advantage that they make previous standards irrelevant, which I have to say is a disappointment. I know I could be a purist and insist on carrying on wearing on shoes without thick foam and carbon plates, but by doing so I would fall behind all my competitors and I don't really want to do that.

I have a pair of these 'super shoes' which I will be wearing for races this year, but I know that if I get particularly good times in those races, I will inevitably put those times mentally into the 'supershoe-enhanced' category, and won't be able to treat them the same as times achieved before the shoes came along. That's a shame.

You might get lucky and be a non responder - then you can keep comparing all your old times to your new ones in the super shoes

I think you mean, then he'll have to try the second pair of Asics when they come out, lol.

Does nobody else feel like this, though? That the numbers aren't real any more?
