A gentleman of A Certain Age (and a decent runner for A Certain Age) was coping very graciously with some teasing about his pink Next% at parkrun this morning :)

I quite like that the 4% now look just like normal trainers in comparison.

The way I see it, either everyone will be using equally good shoes in 5-10 years in which case I'll just have been a slightly early adopter and times will be comparable, or else they will be outlawed in which case, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I'll scrub that performance from my record. I don't think the latter is very likely but won't be too upset if it is.

That is a Japanese shrug by the way.

As a gentleman of a certain age I well remember the controversy around spikes for the Mexico Olympics, developed by Puma and banned after serious pressure from Adidas, ‘‘twas ever thus”

They were banned though. The high jump shoes were also banned. I note World Athletics have said things might change in a year after their study, would be very surprised though.

From a personal time point of view I don't feel the need for the shoes. I don't do much road running though and doubt they are better than spikes on track (especially for me given the type of shoes I'm used to running in).

If we get spike wars and I was missing out on track league races and other opportunities because others are faster with new equipment, I guess I'll have a choice to make.

SPR, I thought we were there already with the announcement of the Air Zoom Victory spike at the same time as the alpha fly.

They launched a sprint spike and a MD spike with the alpha branding last week.

I'm almost tempted not to use the 2 pairs of brand new Vaporflys i have now, one is even in the now rare blue colour. I'm still hoping to also snag a pair in white.

You are all a very bad influence and I have just ordered Vaporfly NEXT%. It will be a while till I get them as I will need my mum to mail them to Iceland but I cannot use them outside till the weather is much better (i.e., not on ice). I'll probably take them on a treadmill once or twice before I go outside but in any case, I understand they don't have a lot of mileage in them so I'll need to find the balance between wearing them in and "keeping them good" for race days. I've never worn Nike before so I am really hoping they do me well on longer runs. I guess I'll take them out on a preparatory half before the big marathon challenge.

In a way, it is an incentive to train harder, to see what I am capable of. There is no point buying "fast" shoes then not putting the work in. But both the marathons for which I am signed up are quite hilly.

I shall report. I might even podcast report :)

I just use mine once or twice before each race, they have lasted about 3 each of marathons and halves, probably about 5 or 6 10ks. Didn't take much wearing in or acclimatising to for me. Some people seem to wear them out very quickly though.

My 4% have 500km in them and they aren’t dead yet!
