I am starting this thread to ask for advice from other Fetchies about the best ways to book independent travel.

What are the best sites for finding flights, trains and accommodation, especially overseas.

In the UK I usually try and book directly with the business, if possible as you get the best rate that way.

I'll add any links and tips to the sidebar.

I feel like Simon Calder... that's a good idea, I bet he has a website.

I used to use skyscanner to find flights, not sure if that's still worth the effort given I've not flown since pre-Covid, and am currently without passport!

This guy gives a lot of good advice on train travel across Europe and many other countries, and some ferry info, including who to book with.

We’re off to Paris in July for a weekend. EasyJet seems the only option for a low-price flight but there don’t seem to be any morning or early afternoon flights from Gatwick or Heathrow on a Friday. Luton the only option for us. There is always Eurostar but that takes longer and means schlepping to the other side of London first. Also, I know Mrs D would not be comfortable being in an undersea tunnel for so long.

Then there is the trial of choosing a reasonable but decent hotel out of a choice of hundreds.

It’s also fun and quite exciting.

With Eurostar you get out in the middle of Paris at the other end though rather than miles away

I didn’t find the tunnel too bad. A bit like being on the tube for 20 minutes

Is it still longer on Eurotunnel, once you've added in check in time, security and baggage claim, travel to and from airports at either end?

True. And the EasyJet pricing system is a nightmare

Mr Ness and I used Eurostar but it was many years ago. We stayed in a little hotel that was in the next street to the Gare du Nord. All very convenient.

I see that France has just had its plan approved to ban short haul domestic flights (anything that is covered by a rail journey of under 2.5 hours) (Eurostar is 2hrs15min for comparison)
