...already unhappy with the idea of you 'wasting' a HM slot on running 13.1 @ 7:2x which you know that you could already do that this evening, solo, in the dark if you wanted to!

Maybe, maybe. I need a bit of a shot in the arm to convince myself I can sustain a pace for a good while; this weekend it's 13 with 8 @ MP so that'll tell me if I can comfortably sustain MP (last year I nailed 7m07 for the 8 mile segment, so I'll run the same route and see what I can do, weather permitting).

If that goes well then I suppose there's little harm in targeting sub 90 but the race is a freebie for me anyway (it's my deferral from Feb 2020, and that was a free entry anyway!) and the plan for the day is 16 with 10 at MP, so it seems an ideal opportunity to do that session. I'm the last person to advocate racing at a pace less than race pace, normally, but I'm very much doing this race by default anyway.

That's a cracker of an early session allmatthew, definitely worth blowing a trumpet over!

I think using races like HM or 10K for MP or tempo work in marathon training rather than all out racing, is ideal. :-) G

allmatthew I'll be at the Hebden 22 on Saturday too - it'll be my first long 'run' (jog, walk...) since November when I got up to 13 miles before being ill for all of December. It's very local to me so it seems rude not to 🤣

Good luck for Saturday KinkyS. I had grand plans about getting lots of hill training in before this run but that didn't happen and my planned recce of the route in December was cancelled at the last minute. I think it's probably for the best that I don't know how rough it will be until I'm in the middle of it.

I went and had a look at some of the blogs connected to the Hebden 22 race listing. I suggest that you don't do that AM, LOL!!

Was looking at Fetch WAVA calculators - and sub 3:15 is a better WAVA, by a whole 0.1%, than my 2013 PB. That's got to be incentive for a target for future, old-me, doesn't it?

Not this spring though! :-) G

My benchmark for sub 90 is feeling at or close to sub 20 5k. Honestly, sandbags to one side, I think I'm 20:30-ish.

But TBH my intent for that race was much more about "sticking to the plan" rather than trying to squeeze out a performance.

Looking back at my 2022 campaign, I didn't run sub 7min mile for longer than 5 miles, so inherently I've no intent to go faster than I did last year.
