I think JD works really well for a marathon improver especially if you are training at the proper vdot paces.

Must admit I struggle to hit the official paces that should be appropriate for me...but I still feel like I've had a proper workout after one of the quality sessions :-)

jda, Ironically its the easy paces i usually fail to hit, long thresholds are still my weakness. Not looking forward to my 2 x 20mins tomorrow.

Baz, have you cut back on the longer long runs through doing JD?

Looking at the schedule there seems to be quite a few fairly tough middling long runs day 15-17 miles but not that many 19+

I tend to make the Q1 long run close to 20miles/3h rather than capping them at the 2h30 level that JD recommends.

JD can look quite daunting at first. That said when I first looked at P&D that was very daunting and I followed a simpler looking Hal Higdon plan for the first time.

I would say P&D and JD are similar and appropriate for someone who has a fair bit of experience under their belt already and is prepared to commit time and effort.

Puzzler you have hit on my one worry which was lack of long runs. That exists with P&D also. In both I always took the opportunity where I could to round up to 20 miles. P&D gives more opportunity for that than JD though and I did worry I was light on LRs. I think I had 3 of 21+ and maybe one of just under 20.

As you say, lots of midweek and weekend medium log runs with effort in them which do seem to work. When I started to get the best out of P&D it was when I did the MLRs as prescribed and if I am honest I used to cut them short as I hated them. Oddly with JD I find doing 14/15 afterwork with an effort session in the middle makes it easier than going out for a 15 mile run.

I meant to ask Baz, have they done away with the large digital clock above the finish line at Abo, as per lou's profile pic, or was the camera just at a different angle which excluded it ?

To be honest gus I can’t remember. It doesn’t appear in any of my pictures. It is funny because one of the things I always wanted to see was a clock starting with a two and when I got there I forgot all about that.
