Aye... but you need to have put plenty of training miles in to the legs in order to give yourself the opportunity to run at 86%. And maybe you hadn't before (and hopefully have now :-))

CW, I'm perhaps missing something simple here, sorry. Isn't that %HRmax value an average figure across the HM? If your HR were to drift higher across the length of the mara then wouldn't the average follow it too or are you assuming no further drift after halfway?

Gosh, it's busy in here!

So, I've had a month off, I'm 10lb heavier than decent marathon weight, and my longest run since Lakeland at the end of July is 9 miles, which nearly killed me. 5 weeks until Chester, any guesses as to how that is going to go?!

I managed 22:34 at Keswick parkrun 😮 feeling like I'm on the wrong thread tbh!

I've wondered similarly CW about quoted HRs here. Given the "sprint to the line", and as you say the gradual impact of both drift and early miles warmup, quoting the "average" HR is a little meaningless.

I'd reckon your HR average for a mile (or maybe more) for some of the handful of final miles might be a more relevant piece of information, coupled of course with the trend if those miles are in the middle of a period when HR is rising (or falling).

For me, miles 17, 18, 19 of Sunday's run were 156 / 156 / 157. Could have been starting a little rise, though terrain comes into account too. But its those rates that are interesting to me, not the average.

Well, CW hasn't said he's talking about the average value. I agree that a more relevant number is the 'settled' HR for the main chunk of the race - ignoring early lower miles, and ignore the throw-the-kitchen-sink-on last couple of miles too.

I was talking about averages! Sure it drifts up, but for the same length run then you can compare. The drift should be larger for the marathon vs a half so it's funny the average is lower. I could give the max HRs as a % of MHR but a sprint to the line might see that jump up quite a bit so it doesn't tell you how it was for a majority of the race.

I'd be interested in how others might measure effort for the whole race from HR data.

WW- The sub1-20 for an HM is kinda my siren too. Just sounds elite or something. I saw the sign for sub 1-20 runners in an event once, I heard someone laugh at the improbability , and I wanted that.... I still laugh myself sometimes, but at other things too.

I was also wondering if I should offer (sacrifice) myself as a sub 3:15 domestique at Chester. Clandestine obvs. But, you know, carry special bags up to the protagonists at crucial moments, okay maybe in the first 10 miles or so, or even further if the pacemakers allow such surreptitious shananigans. Look, if any of you Chesters need a poke in the ribs. I could help here. A gel in time saves nine.( If this sounds far-fetched, I`ve seen Lance Armstrong in Dodgeball several times, right. He never gets deleted!)
