I know that Gobs, what I meant was 'as part of a double' with a faster run later on. What are the benefits ?

Ha cheers Bob, do people tend to just have a chat with those around them and see who's going for what in the first few miles? My first London this year; can't wait.

Volume at a controlled easy effort improves the aerobic engine and allows you to do more volume with that comes better recovery around efforts allowing for better quality speed work and recovery.

The easy running also helps muscle memory strengthen tendons etc . Which can help ward off injury.

In all the years I ran when did you hear me have a muscle issue /itb problem or anything that meant I had to skip runs.

Never is the answer.

Unfortunately I broke things instead :-)
