I am so grateful I am not working just now
Dropped everything to be with mum on Tuesday and will probably be here for 3+ weeks more
I wouldn’t have wanted that conversation with boss

That's worked out really well, Pix :)

Having said that, on the occasions I needed to drop everything to be with the ancestors there was no negotiation with work involved, I just said I was going and I'd have been prepared to be sacked for it.

When I was 50, I anticipated working until I was 57, to get 30 years of service to education.

Towards the end of being 53, I started to despair in the job. My birthday is conveniently in August - fits in well with the school year.

By the time I was 54 and 2 months, I was having the conversation with Geoff. A month later I gave my resignation letter to the Chair of Governors, with a 9 month period of notice.
Then Covid kicked in and my last 6 months in the job were bonkers. I was relieved to walk away when I did.

I’m where you all have been, your experiences resonate. We always thought 57 was the gold dream with 60 at the worst, but chats with IFA suggested 55 more than doable, OH has a spreadsheet and if what he’s put in is right we so can go now … and that doesn’t include the downsizing plan.

OH is 55 in Jan and he intends to leave then, I really want to go on my terms which would be after the conference this time next year but I’m not closing any doors yet. Could be April 2025 or April 2026 latest (my next mission is to find the qualifying periods for bonus payments)

Got something to say?
