I can’t remember a day of nothingness. Concept is lost on me. One of my mantras is ‘today is the youngest you will be for the rest of your life’. As I get older that mantra gets more relevant.

Maybe as energy levels and zest decline the concept will emerge, but for now there’s a fuck of a lot to be enjoyed, experienced and done while I can. They’ll be stuff I miss out on, but hopefully not much and not for the want of trying to cram it all in.

I love that in the summer I can grab any day like today and head to the beach. I don't need or want to go away in the summer.

Nothingness was what I started craving towards the end of my working life. Previously, when I was tied to a treadmill of, largely, my own making, I felt as if I wanted to crawl into a very, very small space and hide there ("a crisp packet on a beach", a friend in a similar situation once said). But later, and probably many times on this thread, I said, "Nothing. I'm going to do nothing. I've never been free to do nothing."

I do a lot of nothing now, in between doing things that aren't work. It's great :)

We volunteered at our local CAB when we first retired - we only managed six months before realising that the job really needed people who had different skills than either of us has (and should be a paid role).

Nowadays we’re just on holiday, either at home or somewhere else 😁

Apart from when in maternity leave I’ve never not worked for as long as now (6 weeks?)

I expected to get twitchy but I’ve not at all

Nothing for me means a day without work or the thought of work; a day when I'm also not caring for my son, and therefore a day when I wake up and do nothing in particular, which could be going to the pics, walking the dog, potting the plants up, even just having a walk for the sake of having a walk, but even then I'm listening to my pods.

So I suppose not *exactly* nothing but still days which were few and far between 5 years ago and which were a blessed respite when they came.

I think there's quite a work/commercial guilt about 'doing nothing' as actually we very rarely do nothing, but tend to think that we have to be 'productive' for at least part of the day.

On a recent creative retreat I went on, we coined the term 'baggy spaciousness' to describe the quality of time, soft attention and ease that we could enjoy 'doing nothing'. Away from a commitment to produce or create something perfect, we went for walks, made food, watched dragonflies, painted and wrote stuff that wouldn't have existed without that soft fascination and time.

Ah, QSTIS, what a lovely poetic way to think about doing nothing. Baggy spaciousness is my new favourite aspiration! :)
