Pix - good news on the tax refund for Mr Pix. @geordiegirl I used to help out at Plym Trail and get a free entry for doing that. I stopped when the event went cupless and I didn't really want to run that race again anyway. Plym Trail events have all been cancelled now, don't know why. There are no road marathons near enough to me to warrant volunteering for free entries. My races often involve long drives and possibly flights and overnight accommodation. |

Thanks shades I was pleased they noticed without request! I should get a smidge of pay tomorrow so will be telling them I’m retired in 32 days to claim my tax back! |

Pix - will they believe that you're retired if you're not drawing a pension?

Having done a bit of race volunteering, I can confirm that any reduction in the cost of entry to future events is not a bargain when everything is taken into consideration. It's probably worth it for high demand races where volunteering gives you a guaranteed entry the following year even if you have to pay for it. (I've mostly volunteered at trail events I don't want to run anyway, just on a whim, and been rewarded with thanks and the occasional banknote or pair of socks.)

Don’t know shades but worth a try! Outlaw give a £40 credit for volunteering which can be passed on. This maybe my last year volunteering with them though as things have changed. They’ve been bought out again. The event is next weekend and the pirates only got confirmation last night of what we are helping with. |

Just saw Pix's post from a few pages. I'm currently awaiting the results of my bowel screening and given the sad news about her friend I'm not counting any chickens and will definitely celebrate if it's clear.

I was thinking of our trail outlaws if you volunteer they give you a free entry so might entertain myself doing that when I have more time on my hands. Lightbulb moment at the pub yesterday regarding finances and everything is looking 100% better. Couple of questions with work IFA and I think wheels may be put in motion. Current thought is OH who is hating his job will either semi retire and reduce hours at work (unlikely to be approved) or pack in current role and start consulting but again at reduced hours. If he reduces hours and takes on more round the house stuff I’ll probably stay at work until April 2026 but depending on a couple of variables it may be as soon as April 2025. |
