Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Anybody out there have private health insurance? It seems to be rather expensive!

My dad looked into private health insurance when I was younger but because it didn't cover pre-existing conditions (I'd already broken my hip at that stage) he didn't bother. When my hip needed replacing we found I could pay a lump sum and get it done at the local Nuffield hospital. It was £9,500 plus about 500 or 600 extra for the post op physio which wasn't covered in that first payment. Prices have obviously gone up since that (February 2003) but that's the route I shall take if it needs redoing.

Have just checked. Their guide price is £16,800 now. Will need to check that there's enough stashed away in my "hip fund". I think there is.

I did through work, and useful it was too, but it was too expensive to keep it up when I left.

I also have a 'knee fund' instead

17k is for a new hip, JB. About what I expected tbh. Not sure what new knees cost.

That actually makes the quotes I've just sourced, which start at around £100 per month for full cover just for me, look quite tempting! It would take me 15 years to save the cost of a major joint replacement, and I might need several.

In that case it does make sense, Vrap. I started setting aside the money I thought I'd need. So I've been saving since 2003 (must admit we've dipped into it for the odd holiday or two along the way. 😉)

And within five minutes I had a telephone call from an insurance salesman wanting to know the details of my requirements :-O I apologised nicely for having wasted his time.

(Sounds too good to be true, probably is, I'll bet there are big first-timer discounts in there and the rates would go flying up over time.)

Probably. And you might not necessarily need several, Vrap. My resurfacing was estimated to last about 14 or 15 years when Mr Krikler put it in. As you know it's currently just over 21 years old and still going strong.

Two knees eventually, I suspect, Ness. And possibly a big toe joint, though I'd like the options for that one to be a bit better before I need it.
