My father-in-law is 88 and still earning money through consultancy work, taking part in research, having books pubslished and serving on the boards of various charities. I wouldn't be too quick to write off your life post-80 as involving dribbling in your chair.

FiL is 93 and dementia encroaching now, but up to the pandemic he was still working at the uni, travelling to conferences etc. I used to think that working part-time in later life would be fun but I got bored with it pretty quickly once I realised I didn’t need to! I did watch a remote seminar this afternoon just to remind myself |

My oldest ancestor to die was my mum aged 78... Currently, I am 58. If I make it to 68, I will be very happy. 78 ecstatic, provided I have quality of life. |

I’m having discussions about giving up my 2 day/week job in January. It’s doable, and would mean semi retired at 53, fully retired at 57. Exciting, but feels way less momentous than when I left my full time job. |

I can't wait to be fully retired again - last shift is 23rd December. I could just stop now but I won't as dont like letting people down. The other lady who started the same day as myself, has already left. Any pennies earned were going to buy me a nice new Garmin, but that is already on my wrist so pennies will go towards another trip away in the wobblebox |

On Monday eL Bee! and I will be visiting an octogenarian lady who, among other things, teaches keep fit classes. She was my mum's best friend from childhood. Dad's talking about coming down to visit her when the winter's over. I would approve.
