I'd like not to be quite so far from a swimming pool or a gym that does classes and stuff, but if it involved moving house it would become a very expensive luxury. The only thing that might persuade me to move would be in order to be a useful grandparent, and at the moment that's not on the horizon.

Currently we have my house in Woodbridge, Suffolk and hers in Cotswolds. Both in great areas and big enough for the two of us. We're currently scuttling between the 2 but the A12/M25/M4 slog is grating. Consolidating brings the dream forever home into budget, and there's still a considerable equity release left over. |

Our general location is fabulous but I do keep an eye on the market as regards downsizing to a more manageable house. Having stubborn elderlies painting themselves into awkward corners does tend to focus the mind, and we can’t just dump our problems on our nonexistent children to sort out, as they have tended to do…. But we are a few decades off any serious issues, hopefully. |

I too can confirm that V'rap lives in a lovely place. I would move tomorrow if I could but don't know where too. I also have lovely neighbours but (this may sound harsh) they are old and getting more and more dependent on us (they have no children). We also have room to park the wobblebox outside which is hard to find |

There is no point me downsizing. I'd have to move further away from Cambridge to make it worthwhile, meaning that I'd have little or no public transport to hospital and other health services. That wouldn't be too much of a problem while I can still cycle everywhere I need, but that won't last for many more years and then I'd be stuck.

Whilst the prospect of living in a small village appeals, I think I'd rather have easy access to stuff where I don't need to get in a car or bus or train to get anything. Where I live we have copious bars, caffs, restaurants and even several theatres and a cinema. I can walk to them all. We even still have shops! That works for me.

I love my scenic bit in the middle of nowhere but it has been harshly brought to my attention that it is not ideal when undergoing cancer treatment. As in: you need to go to your nearest a&e within the hour. OK, they closed the one at Neville Hall so nearest is Hereford: at least 1 hour or Newport, at least one hour. |

This afternoon I've spent 2 hours in the eye clinic of University Hospital North Midlands. Well looked after, and only 20 minutes away. The only thing we lack around here is a decent supermarket, but the ones we do have aren't that bad; you just have to get in early with pointy elbows (just to clarify, we don't do that!) |

We have Warwick Hospital about 10 miles away, plus Stratford’s own local hospital for minor injuries and scans and stuff. Also almost a full spread of Supermarkets including a Tesc, Morrisons, Aldi, M&S, Lidl and a Waits. I can walk to Aldi, Marks and Tesc. The Trose needs a motor but it’s < 10 minutes.

Oh dear Sigh I hope the eye clinic visit wasn't a consequence of your headbanging! My local hospital is about 7-8 miles away by bicycle, and it also happens to be the regional hospital for several specialities, which are good reasons for not moving. Also, my large village has several shops and businesses catering for basic daily needs. The nearby city has several supermarkets and shops for most things that the village can't supply. |
