Here the aliens are receptive to the word, but they seem already "without sin". They run a kind of communistic, ego-less enterprise. There are quite a few secrets, like where did the previous missionary go, that need unravelling and I suspect they will be quite dark.

A Case of Conscience sounds interesting. Jesuits in space rang a bell, but the book I've read is The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell. It turns out that Jesuits in space is a recurring theme (https://www.adherents.com/lit/sf_jesuit.html) - who knew?

A kind of mirror to these catholic themes is Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter J Miller.

100 pages in and the Clinton/Patterson Thing is excellent, much to my surprise and delight. Very much reminiscent of Sorkin’s peerless television West Wing

Is it indeed, Greg? That's a pretty strong recommendation, I must look out for it.

As I’ve never seen West Wing this review is unhelpful in the extreme. Gives it a thumbs down and a 1star review on Amazon.

I think you might like it, Dio. The West Wing, that is.
