Apparently not. I also loved If... when I read it, but can’t remember anything about it. I know where it is on the shelf, and it’s only thin, and I’ve just finished a book, but I know that there’s a pile of unread Penguin Classic crime books lying around which might better suit the weather (and energy levels).

I'm only aware of it due to the recent film adaptation (which I haven't seen) but I have to say, that title is quite annoying on its own and would set me up with a judging-a-book-by-its-cover prejudice it would be hard to overcome.

I read it, but wouldn't have kept it. I remember it as harmless fluff.

I read it, didn't keep it, and thought the author must have a very good agent to have got a fair amount of 'awareness' going when it came out - more than it really deserved.

We have a copy at home that I’ve never read. I’ve looked at it several times and thought ‘nah’. It was given to Mrs D who also hasn’t read it.

I think the fact she died before it was published and it was her only novel helped. Harmless fluff is a very good description of it.

I’m lost. This thread is talking about Jersey Royal Potatoes, yes? It’s the other one that’s getting confused between Eleanor Oliphant and Moby Dick?

It can’t be said enough, Hilary Mantel is a genius.
I’m Reading Beyond Black at the moment. You start off thinking yes, this is all very well, but then it transcends the ordinary and you are left reeling. In the words of a book reviewer, this is a novelist working at the height of her considerable powers.
It’s not a comfortable read, but it’s compelling.

I really enjoyed beyond black. The French Revolution one is really excellent too
