Me too also. My love of an America which probably never existed in the first place comes from him.

Meanwhile, thanks to whoever mentioned Hugh Thomson for causing me to laugh very loudly in the office...

when she received her invitation to the Captain’s table, [she] wrote back giving her apologies and explaining, ‘I cannot accept your invitation as, on principle, I never eat with the staff.

Lots of people I've never heard of, and some I like the sound of (good snippet there Greg :-) ).

Has anyone else read Gavin Young's Slow Boats to China? This thread has just reminded me of it and how much I enjoyed it. It's probably at least thirty years since I read it, and I must hunt it out in the attic bookshelves and read it again.

I'm a Bill Bryson fan. I've probably said before, somewhere on this site, what a terrific, wise and humorous speech he gave as Chancellor when son1 got his first degree. He spoke to the whole audience, young graduands *and* parents, without being patronising, pompous or trite. Not everyone has that gift.

I sloped off and spent half an hour in Waterstones on the back of this. I came back with:

For his latest wheeze, Moore drives 6,000 miles from one coast of the U.S.A. to the other to work out why so many seemingly sane Americans voted for Donald Trump as their President. And by only travelling through counties that voted for Trump. And by driving a 1924 Model-T Ford.

That looks good, I knew he'd been up to something, been a while since he did his Iron Curtain Bike ride.
