I really enjoyed French Revolutions and it completely put me off doing anything of the sort myself

I did the opposite, and had a rather good cycling holiday in France, nothing mad, 30-50 miles a day, the drinking a bottle of wine during a picnic halfway DOES NOT WORK.

I mean to do another trip like that. I remember my blog containing the wines I got through.

I was thinking of Tim Cahill (the writer) and also somehow confusing him with Chris Stewart, the author of Driving Over Lemons. There are far too many books and writers, aren't there?

Yes, what I mean is, it made me avoid the gruelling miles and hills (mountains). My brother-in-law did that pre-TdF thing people do where you can do some of the stages a few weeks before the pros. But then he is built like a brick thingie (and probably takes a lot of steroids! :-o )

Writers must be stopped. Especially the ones who wrote Wizard Werzal's Tour of Redhill and Reigate

Bryson I don't like, Thubron very good. Chatwin I found hard work but worth it in the end.

I really liked Hugh THomson too, The White Rock, Tequila Oil....
