It's generally assumed to be Mrs. D. - but there are no actual references, or even clues in the text. Hitchcock has her silhouetted in the building, and iirr, the ceiling falls in on her.

Du Maurier is far more subtle. The ending is brilliant - a glow on the horizon and ash on the wind, that's all.

I also love the conscious or unconscious - it really doesn't matter - echo of Jane Eyre and the vengeful destruction of Thornfield Hall.

New film completely changed ending.

But Hitchcock took similar - but different - liberties.

There really is no reason to believe Mrs. D is a goner....

I read it for the first and only time a few years ago. Would like to re-read it now, after all these comments. Must have had it from the library, though, as it isn't on my bookshelf.

I didn't see the film.

Rebecca will be my next book when I finish London belongs to me (probably tonight) because I started it a while ago and got fed up with the new Mrs De W who I found to be an utter wet and wede. In view of the positive comments zbove I'll try again :-)

I started Starveacre by Andrew Michael Hurley last night about 8:30. I finished it at 1am :-o Couldnae put it down, though it has a couple of very obvious flaws.

Part of a 1-star review of it:
"I did not like this book at all, to begin with I disliked the print or typeset, I felt like the print was larger than regular print while not being a large print book. I actually think if the type had been sized properly this would have been a smaller, thinner book."
