Just had a browse in one of the local independent bookshops and have bought Rebecca, which I am ashamed to say I've never read, and 'To serve them all my days' by RF Delderfield. He lived in Sidmouth for many years so I feel I ought to support a local boy ;-)

I have read both, and loved them both, but not sure I'd enjoy the RFD now. It was the first book I read with sex in it.

"The first book I read with sex in it..." That sounds almost good enough for a thread on its own.

Ooh yes Columba - what fun!

I think the (frankly appalling) Ian Fleming for me! Though I'm not sure. Of course lots of classics have sex in ...but it's sort of in disguise!

Yes, I'm not sure how explicit it would have to be, to count as sex. I read Lady Chatterley's Lover when it first came out in paperback after the trial (I was 17) and that certainly is explicit, but I'd read Ian Fleming before then.

Got a bit of the old tingle factor from Rumer Godden's The Greengage Summer when I was 12 or so....

Not sure why I can remember that from (approx) 40 years ago, but can't remember what I had for breakfast...
