Grew mine in a small wooden planter in about 10" depth of soil. Watered it with rainwater and added no food. I think the fact that it said "Russian Giant" on the seed packet contributed more than anything I did. 🌻

I used the same type of seeds (albeit a year old) as you! Actually, mine were self-seeded from last year's batch.

My champion and the two lesser ones pictured are all in fairly small pots, 2-3 litres, but crucially were grown in the greenhouse until they wouldn't fit. The ones I planted out in soil and weather only attained 5-6 feet.

But you are right down in That England where it is on average considerably warmer than up here (especially so this summer).

I have admitted that I tend to have a BLACK thumb...so keeping them alive is generally considered a win! I really don't know what I'm doing... *hangs head in shame!*

Mine was self-set. I literally did nothing, except get WW to tie it to the fence last week as the shrub supporting it appeared to be struggling!
