Twelve of my seedlings look viable. I've potted them on today and am hoping they'll survive a fortnight of neglect. If not, I'll start off some more.

Surely you should be staying at home, pottering for hrs in you garden and growing the sunflowers to end all sunflowers

Whats with all this salivating to foreign parts to do crazy runs and bike rides (depending which half of the velocibees you are)

My first lot began to germinate on Sunday, a warm-ish day. Those were planted by the grandchildren and they will migrate to Somerset before they are too big. I need to plant some of my own. This year I've bought 4 metre-high ones, according to the packet.

My seedlings have survived being left in the garden after being left unattended for nearly a week. Might need repotting soon.

I didn’t buy any new seeds this year, just planted from old packets but only 3 out of the dozen or so have germinated, think I will just pamper those.

I had some pop up which I'd given up on, think they just needed a bit more warmth

OK - this years Competition.

The Roolz

1. Begins when you can
2. Ends September 4th
3. Biggest one wins

4. Disasters are to be posted so we can all laugh/commiserate/laugh at them

5. All forms of growing aids are allowed. There's no drug testing in this competition so if you find the Lance Armstrong of Sunflowers - grow it and win !

6. Bigleggy always wins ;-)
7. As the national flower of Ukraine is the Sunflower, the Russian Giant variety is banned.
