I'm moving in a month to somewhere with full working internet - way-hay! Rest assured I'll be straight on the tunes and contributing to the hot hundred. Miss listening to these tunes sooooo much and hearing everyone's contributions.

It's a rainy day and I'm sure everyone will have been wearing their anorak at some point, so with that in mind I thought I'd share some top-drawer anorak obsessive soul with you. First some background:

Has anyone heard of the "Stafford Sound" before or even know what it means? This is really down in the weeds stuff, but basically after Wigan Casino closed in 1981 northern soul effectively died, only to resurface in a very underground kind of a way at an old night club in Stafford. Over the years it was open they played a "new" kind of soul that was very much based on Beat Ballads and East Coast stuff, by that I mean soul that was typified by the Beach Music sound (google it) that was played in the Carolinas. It's very identifiable and a lot of it blue-eyed. Anyhow, I've been researching some stuff from Stafford and been surprised by a) how little of it I know and b) how good it is. Here's one that I really like - enjoy.

I like that but can’t help seeing a guy singing it in the Vic Reeves ‘Club style’. Great drums and horns

Band is tight. I’m going to have another listen. Just got on to Etta James, ‘I’d rather go blind’, live 1975 at Montreux on YT

The orig version of course, Etta James is a class act.

Did you listen to much of that Chicano Soul I posted a few weeks back. Trish Toledo does a version of "I'd Rather Go Blind" that is excellent. She is a wonderful singer, I'm a bit surprised she's not more popular.
