I'm not sure we ever reached a conclusion on "goals" and "targets", other than some feeling that: - running 700 miles in a year may more often be described as a goal - running a mile in under 10 minutes may more often be described as a target but I don't think that was a strongly held (or objectively justifiable) point of view, so I for one would not object to goals = targets.
However ... "challenges" has been used on quite a widespread basis for a specific endeavour over a specific course or route, particularly for virtual challenges in these lockdown times. I would find it helpful to reserve it separately.
Having said that, I see it is in use on 77 threads, many of which I would not think of as challenges at all, except is a very loose sense (eg sunflower growing!). So I would understand if my view on this isn't widely agreed with!

I know there's a justifiable reluctance to let thread owners tag their threads. Could there be some advice prompt to put suggested tags in the owner's first post. It might make it clearer in some cases what the thread owner intended it to be about. Then Taggers could add suitable standard tags?

Groundhog - I think the "About This Thread" box is there to enable thread owners to explain what their new thread is about. That and the title, of course. (Look at the number of threads with "Help" in the title to see how unhelpful some thread titles can be!)
Tagging isn't supposed to do that; it's designed to enable the algorithm to find other threads that users of the new thread might find interesting/useful/worth a look.

I've amalgamated goals=targets, but left challenges for now.
I've also update the algorithm a bit, so that it will hopefully match a wee bit better.
Rarer tags are given more precedence than they used to have, and if a thread is a good match for the tags, it's then ranked on date of last update (most recent takes precedent), then number of watchers (highest takes precedent), then on date created (most recent takes precedent).
Interested to see what effect that has
As for owners volunteering tags... I'll have a think about that. Usually I'd say that the purpose of the thread is *fairly* self-explanatory from the first post.

if targets=goals, then do the sub x time targets need checking/tagging with the distance and maybe something like "sub" ? not sure the sub 3 marathon thread would be very related to the 500 miles a year one? for instance

Maybe we should come at those from a different direction? What about the 700 miles thread being tagged with "annual" and the sub-3 with "target" or "time" even.
Having just posted above, though, about what I think the purpose of tagging is, you could argue that the 1,200 miles a year thread is the *last* thread someone on the 700 miles a year thread would want to see! Discuss.

I've added 'sub' to all the obvious sub threads - but happy to change the name.
