I ran a HM marathon in 1:26:28 today.

Race in super shoes and max effort (concise race report in the 1:30 thread) so I have to be realistic and admit a sub 3 in Amsterdam is unlikely.

It is good to be realistic Charles but reading your report on the sub 90 thread suggests that you probably would have run a bit quicker if you hadn’t gone out quite so boldly. You’ve also got 5-6 more weeks of solid training.

There’s still hope!

And congrats on the Pb!!

Did you taper for the half at all?

Like WW said, still some weeks to go so focus on getting the miles in and then a good taper so you’re fresh for the start line

I think you might be close Charles?
1:26, is not that far away to be able to do a sub 3h?
Not that I know by experience, but still :)

@Charlesvdw can run a PB without aiming for sub 3. Obviously see how training goes but a PB is still a PB even if it's not sub 3.

Well you can certainly get close to 3h off that. Whether there’s room to squeeze out a couple of mins better performance…hard to tell.

The only taper I did was skipping a 7 mile easy run the day before the race.

You're right @SPR : anything under 3:03:33 would be a PB and my odds are better for that goal. A sub 3 is my North Star but I turned 50 this year so it may never happen and I can live with that.

The plan:
This week I won't do anything but easy miles to get fully recovered, then 2 big training weeks followed by a 2 week taper for Amsterdam.

Agree with SPR pb is nowt to be sniffed at. Think of a, b, and c targets. A is sub 3. B is a pb etc...

I agree with, oo, 3 goals for a mara is always good. A and B goals seem clear, C goal perhaps sub 3.05.

Factoring in a peak couple of weeks training and a proper taper it could be on. My view would be though, go out at pb pace so you are somewhere between the A and B goals then see where the 2nd half takes you. Going straight out for goal A may result in all goals being missed.

I don't think turning 50 should be a dream killer here either. Still good years to come.

I'm running Worcester half tomorrow. 5m wu- 13 at mara pace- 2m cd. Conditions look perfect for that plan, possibly a little warm for all out racers.
