What about getting a PT to get you going with a suitable program, or get some ideas from YouTube.

Thanks all.

Zero interest in a PT!! That's a commitment level far too far! Same for attending a pilates class or similar.

I suppose I'm thinking "what can I do in the lounge when I'm watching The Traitors, ideally in my work clothes if I've not changed from work, or perhaps in pyjamas" that might be a gateway to me doing other "stuff". Almost a C25K for strength, but in my lounge on my terms!

(Though I will look at the SCY for Runners).

I will look at the other threads, but those look / sound like they are for enthusiasts of this sort of stuff. And I'm looking to nudge myself into it because I hate the concept!!

Thaanks @auburnette !! Will take a look at that, maybe dropping some money on it might actually provide me with some sticking power. I feel like I'm at my first meeting of a self help group "Hello, I'm larkim and I never do any stretching or strength work and am addicted to not doing it"

Ditto to be fair. Find it too boring but know it has been / would be hugely beneficial.

As an absolute minimalist approach:

Do some squats while the kettle is boiling.

Do some press ups and sit ups in the lounge while you're watching the telly.
Add some burpees, lunges, squat jumps, pull ups if you can find a suitable bar (get some cheap resistance bands to help initially) and you'll be fine.

I heard a podcast a while back about ageing and strength training/loss and they were saying that the thing that moves older people into a care home most often is when they can't get up off the loo. Doing regular squats will at the very least delay that!

The other thing is falling and being unable to get back up. How about some burpees while you still can? It's basically practicing getting down on the ground and being able to get back up.

Or lift something heavy over your head and get out of the way when it comes down again.

Seriously it’s no so bad. Just do it!

About This Thread

Maintained by larkim
Deep down I know that as I get older I should be doing some strength work. But I can't be bothered and / or don't know where to start.

Where would be a good place to start, being realistic in terms of convincing someone who instinctively doesn't fancy the concept so drip feeding them with good starters?

Almost a "just one thing" type approach. And with an ultimate goal of health, rather than running or fitness performance.
