I reckon my payback period is down to just over 5 years! Our elec bill was about £1,000 per year back when off peak was 5p per kWh and peak was 16p and standing charge 25p per day (2021). Then everything went mad July 2022 when we rolled off a fixed tariff. Normal tariff went up to 35p peak and 7.5p off peak, with limited opportunity to use off peak. And since then we've seen peak at up to 46p, albeit, ave daytime around 30p. Sep 2022 we put in solar and battery. I've got nearly 2 full years of data. Our bills are just under zero for each year, about £20 credit. So I was thinking we were saving maybe £1,000 a year. But actually, we're saving closer to £2,000 a year, because, if we hadn't been able to shift consumption through any other method significantly to use more off peak somehow, I think that's what it would have gone up to. Inexact science, but if so, then £12,000 solar + battery will have paid for itself much more quickly than I thought. G |

Wish I could automate my export setting on inverter/battery though. Manual setting on/off 2 x per day. G

We've had ours a year now and I doubt we're making anywhere near what you are, Happy... good on you!

Do you mean actual cash export Cath? Ours is only about £700 per year. Or do you mean including the reduction in the bill that you would have had? For us, that is the nearly £2K per annum (big house, wife running outbuilding electrics from same meter, many hours of darkness in winter, and also electric car charging, albeit, pretty much always off peak.) G

G Our biggest challenge is we can’t fully charge the battery overnight in winter when it’s cheap to do so, which means we end up paying the more expensive day rates. Sure, we make a good amount in the summer, but it doesn’t offset the winter spend which is what I had hoped for. I might give the installer more grief about the supposed ‘operating temperature’ story we got last year. I’m not sure I buy it. |

Is that because your battery is in a cold location @cathrobinson ?

What size battery do you have @cathrobinson ? We have a 13.5 kw and can charge it from flat to 100% between 2am and 5am on octopus cheapest rate. |
