AG2R have also had a few positives over the last year or so. Perhaps next on the hitlist after Astana?

The thing that stands out for me is the acknowledgement that there's a lot of doping going on at levels where you wouldn't expect it - folk on Fetch who race bikes at any level, and international masters triathletes like C-Cat and RMo3B, and probably some of our county and national runners, are competing against doped athletes.

I have never knowingly doped but did take some sort of Orange juice supplement once that I was offered by a karate teacher. It contained pseudo-ephedrine. It didn't help my karate technique but I was pinging on the sunday club run following. For the first and only time I was told that I was looking strong that day.I mentioned that I had been drinking this juice only to be told that it contained amphetamines and it was no wonder I was on fire. Having read part of the CIRC report it seems that the reason I was never competitive in LVRC races had nothing to do with the fact that I was a crap racer but more to do with the fact that everyone else was juiced up. An anecdote too far I suspect although grounded in fact for some I guess. USA and Italian sportive riders have been found out. In South Wales it's more likely to be young rugby players abusing steroids to bulk up. Too many of them trying but thankfully also being discovered and banned. |

I've taken pseudoephedrine in the past, as part of a cold remedy. I'd drop dead from palpitations if I tried to run after taking it. Even around here, lots of the young lads are taking all sorts of shit that they buy at the gym. I wouldn't be surprised if at least some of the testosterone getting hurled around the road biking scene wasn't endogenously produced (goodness knows it's easy enough to get hold of). I am sure nobody on Fetch has ever competed with anything stronger than a double espresso and a couple of ibuprofen in their system. |

V'Rap - too true - nice time to bring up this story again of amateur runner Christian Hesch. nytimes.com And if anyone hasn't read it and thinks "drugs cheats all worthless losers", it's worth reading, because I feel some sympathy with this guy, hit by a car, relies on prize money to supplement wages, 5 month layoff uses EPO to get back into shape and then stays stuck on the stuff. He's wrong, but it shows how easy it is to fall into the trap. BUT then I have less sympathy with this kind of mindset: theguardian.com I admit to running on coca cola(caffeine) and ibuprofen, both known performance enhancers. In fact caffeine is so potent that above a certain limit, it used to be banned, and a ban has been reconsidered: menshealth.com so we have to be careful about hurling the first stone. |

Oh and AG2R of course had Peraud in 2nd and Bardet in 6th and won the team prize. Peraud (who I like) is a 37 year old vet who in 2011 came 9th and did well in a shedload of things and in 2014 came 2nd, and really like Chris Horner in the Vuelta win in 2013, you have to at least raise an eyebrow.
