Where does the 'starters' number actually come from? 'cos there's usually plenty of DNS, let alone DNF!

I believe that 2,000 were entered for the full marathon, so 1300 starting sounds about right. Maybe a lot of them called it quits at the halfway stage.

I'm sure the announcer at the start said there were 12,000 competitors in all.

christ I feel even better now if so many called it a day - not crowing on anybody's downfall but it shows how the weather can have an impact and proves the amount of training and mental stamina you need to finish - sorry for going on and sounding like some mara vet.

anway main aim was achieved, lots of lovely ladies bots and overtook much younger more atheletic types :)

Jono - I saw several people who'd started the 2nd lap walking back to the town centre just after the halfway mark. I'm just happy that I made it round. Glad I wasn't the only one who spotted the lovely array of talent that ran in front of me, just didn't want to sound like a perv. If only more of them had gone on to do a 2nd lap I probably wouldn't have struggled as much. No offense but running behind you doesn't quite have the same effect ;-)

Bit like the ipod/mp3 thing, would it have hurt as much if I'd had some music to distract me?

The "struggling Fetchie" that Helen, PaulaMc and a few others saw on the Greenway was me (Fetch vest, red Fetch Buff and a limp)...........although I presume there must have been another one too, given the 3:30 runners also seeing one.

At various points between 21 and 22 I was staggering in a not very straight line, lying face down in the grass wondering how I got there and even found a nice bench to sit on for a few minutes (Garmin says.......28 minute mile). After taking on lots of water at 22 and 23, and having taken the weight off my hip joint a bit, I managed to keep going to the finish. From about 23 to the finish I kept overtaking then being overtaken by Gooner, depending on who could manage to muster a jog when............I think he finished about 50m ahead of me. The point being...........I finished!
