Keith - think you might have some DOMS after that.

Big G - innovative long run, which probably broke up the distance quite well psychologically.

WP - that's pretty good mileage coming back from flu.

I see we've got a couple of cold nights next week, just hope it doesn't mean ice.

Gym done. I was too tired to even contemplate the Stairmaster today.

Shades Sounds like a great week running wise but some tiredness.

I just checked our weather two days were temps could go either way. I better run before PT on Tuesday just in case too icy one day in the week.

WP - I think our weather is much the same.

I spoke to Ben, gym instructor today. I've used up all my free reviews now so I will book an hour's PT session with him early next month. I should have reached target weight and then it will be to try and increase muscle. At last review my muscle % is at very lowest figure of range, so that's not good.

Big G-That looks a really good long run this morning.
WP-I had too many reminders for my physio this week, letter and 3 texts.
Longer day than planned in work today so not going to run, with my long run tomorrow I should still hit mid 50's over 5 runs so a good enough place.

My dentist have a good automated system. One week before appointment a gentle reminder email. 2 days before appointment a text which you have to reply Yes or No confirming attendance.

NHS must waste so much money and valuable appointments by 'no shows', for a multitude of reasons.

Shades-Thats very similar to our NHS here, except we get 2 texts and 1 email and both emphasise it costs the NHS £160 for every missed appointment.

Argh, I've got so behind on this thread! Lots of good runs/gym work/weight loss/muscle gain to catch up on!

WP - glad you're finally recovered and are back running! Shame about the ice, though.

Shades - I know this was several pages ago now, but I enjoyed all the discussion about Dingle! It's made me wonder about going back in 2026 ;) I'd really recommend it, or the half, for anyone who hasn't been. I can only imagine how fantastic the ultra there was - such a shame it doesn't exist any more. I've not yet done an ultra but would absolutely have gone there for one. I do really like the look of the DD - it would be so good if there were more events around like that. I'm up in South Cumbria, where practically all the localish ultras are trail with ridiculous elevation, which isn't what I'd want!

Ian - wow, Comrades - that's excellent - will be really interesting to hear about that one.

Rcouture - your treadmill sounds good - which brand is it? We keep mulling over getting one, but it's a struggle to find decent reviews of them!

Thanks to everyone who said good things about Berlin! Definitely excited about it (and also happy to be running a German marathon as I dabble in learning German).

It was a nice sunny day up here today but not icy - just a short jog for me, but I feel I'm finally building up consistent mileage again after several weeks of hiatus. I'm doing a new (to me) type of race in early March, where you do as many laps of a 5.something-mile course as you can/want in 6 hours - not sure yet what I'll aim to do, but I've realised it's only a month away, and I've not done that many proper long runs recently!

Gipfel- good to hear your training is going well.

If you intend to do marathon distance or more in your March race, let me know and I'll put it on the list. It can easily be removed if you decide on the day to pull up after a couple of laps.

Our talk of Dingle has inspired me to pencil it in for 2026 too.

There's virtually no road ultras in the UK, I mean proper road events not Challenge events. There's quite a few in Ireland. Tralee do a 50k and a 100k, separate events on different dates, I've not done either.

39.3 miles is a fairly standard distance in Ireland, I've done Connemara and Longford . There's one other, can't remember where it is.

These are all road events.

Just had my porridge, waiting until dawn to go out for my run. Taking a Luchos to test out even though I wouldn't normally take any fuel with me for 10 miles.

About This Thread

Maintained by Shades
Back in December 2005 I started a thread on Runner's World offering a marathon training plan on 3 runs a week. I had my own running club at the time (Womens Running Network) and I had successfully trialled the training plan when I took a group of girls to Dublin to run their first marathon.

Over the years the thread has evolved into a chat thread, with a bit of training advice, race reports, for predominantly marathon runners.
