I think it was Leith Hill half we were confronted with puddles like that, straight through... oh £$^*, thigh deep!

For OCR’s which means you can be ankle deep in shit one minute then on tarmac the next I’ve used Adidas off-road shoes and Salomon. If you look around on the internet you can often find Salomon on offer especially female sizes.

I have Inov8 off road shoes. Run straight through the mud - it's easier, quicker and fun! You are going to be muddy anyway and, as someone else, said you get to splash the mincing people. I did a two day Dartmoor thing a few years ago which cured me of trying to avoid mud. That had stepping stones to cross a river which I can't do because I can't judge distance well enough with my one eye so I just walked straight across. The people gingerly stepping from one stone to another stared at me in disbelief and the people behind ploughed across with me. The water was thigh high and freezing but it was a quick way to cross!

Running through water can sometimes help in temporary getting the crap off your shoes.

I wore one of my pairs of trailys to parkrun today, they were caked when I put them on (what's the point in cleaning them?) but now they're nice and clean.
