I think I need a bit of advice from you lovely people. I ran lots just under 9 years ago did a marathon and slowly after that the running stopped. Keep trying to get back in it and have done 6 weeks so far.

I am doing a 30 minute continuous run on Mondays, a 30 minute (run 2 1/2 min walk 1/2 min) on Thursday and an hour (run 2 1/2 min walk 1/2 min).

I was thinking of possibly entering a race later in the year to have something to focus on. If I was going to do this I would need t increase distance on my long runs and was wondering if there was a way to do run/walk by distance?
And information would be appreciated.

Hi ICanDoThis, I use a 30:30 ratio (30 secs run/30 secs walk) for my long runs and have even done marathons using that ratio.
It just depends what you feel most comfortable with.
Jeff Galloway has a calculator where there are suggested ratios based on a magic mile pace (your mile pace for a continuous run).
Hope this helps.

Thank you for the information lin50. I will have a look at the the training times as just randomly chose 2 1/2 mins run/1/2 min walk to try and ease myself back in to running.

Great re start to your running ican. Re a race it all depends on what distance and whether you want to "jog" or push yourself! There's no limit to distance using run/walk , there are some impressive races done by several people on this thread ( not me I hasten to add!). You can find people who have done half marathons run/walking here and been amazingly disciplined in their jeffing!
Looks like already you could do a 5k so you're well on the way.
After my somewhat better outing yesterday this morning's 3.3 was shocking. I won't mention the exact ratio through embarrassment but I found twenty seconds run very very hard! Still, haven't been on the medication for even a week yet so it's a waiting game!

Dvorak
Do you have a Garmin, ICanDoThis? Under Run, intervals, edit, and your interval is set to <duration>, below that is <type>, and this can be set to <distance> instead. (Or <open>, which I haven't used, but think might be pressing the lap button to mark an interval ad lib.)

I have got a Garmin Dvorak. Will investigate the distance settings. Only worked out last week how to send a workout to it. Only had it 10 years

I prefer using the gym boss to my garmin for timed runs/walks. It is easily set for any time/times and for a hundred repeats. Nice loud beeps and vibro alerts and clipped onto shorts very firmly.
Of course doing structured intervals/ distance is another matter although time can be good enough regardless of distance.
3.4 miles was ok today on yet another glorious sunny morning. Still feeling knackered on just short run bits but sticking with routine.
