It's easier to maintain form at a lower stroke rate. I find it difficult to go above 26, but would be doing about that for a PB attempt or for high-intensity interval work. Find some Olympics on youtube and watch our teams! Nice steady rhythm, finish pushing back with the legs before you even start thinking about pulling with your arms. Take more time on the return than on the effort to allow yourself to recover before the next stroke. |

Sally - I rarely stroke above 26. Many years ago I was shown how to row and the lessons stuck. Does anyone else wince when they see a Personal Trainer with someone on a rower making no effort to help the client to help themselves. The over the bridge manoeuvrings are so funny |

I have used an indoor rower to maintain fitness when I have been unable to run. This year I have set combined running and rowing goals to try to avoid injury and be a bit more balanced. The saw the discussion between sallyKate and Gobi about technique ; concept2.co.uk this link will take you to the concept 2 website where there is a basic video about technique - with a good slice at the end about faults and how to correct them. The biggest lesson for me on the rower was not to get too macho about the resistance setting - some of the later concept 2 models allow you to calibrate the "drag factor" (notional resistance through the virtual water ; not a measure of the degree of cross dressing in your training kit) ; I found I was setting the thing WAY too high. The equivalent for the Olympic Race boats is often at about 4 or 5, not the 7 or 8 that I was using previously....Doh ! Good luck with the rowing. |

Welcome to Fetch JonnersP! High resistance settings are a no-go for me anyway due to tennis elbow, I get best results at around 3 or 4. My 10K PB is 47:30, set two years ago - in fact I think that's the only time I've ever rowed 10K! I'll be working on that this month for the Concept 2 challenge series but not sure I'll do any better than that given my current fitness. |

Hello rowing thread. Any fellow tunturi users on here? They seem very differently calibrated, I reckon 10K'd take me 2h30

Thanks for the link Jonners. I always used ot have it on 10 till i read on here way back that 5-6 was probably better 9 i can't remembe the reasons why ) . Anyway, ive neglected the rower for a while and went on yesterday to do a 10K . 41 mins , a lot slower than usual but heck i had a grand workout. on a whim i decided to blast th last 100 of each 1K in a sort of interval sess. I actually think it made to row slower for me . |

Hello Mac ![]() flip it's probably something to do with replicating the motion of the boat on water. You're never going to be pulling every stroke with so much resistance as 10 gives you because of the momentum of the boat - it's not a standing start each stroke. I always mix up my speeds/efforts - otherwise it would be almost as boring as treadmill running... That would be a shame Gobi ![]() |
