I'd go for road shoes. Most will cope well with lighter trails and if you want the best cushioning that will always be in a road shoe.

@Ness I used to wear almost exclusively Brooks Ghost - not sure if those are neutral or not. Once I knew they suited me, I used to buy them online and save a bit off the list price - but we were still talking £70-£80 each time. Looked at them yesterday and the list price of the latest version is £135!! Mind you, we are talking 10 years since I dropped off regular running. I have discovered a branch of Runners Need near where I live, so probably going to book myself in for gait analysis. |

I ran hundreds of miles in a pair of Ghosts including maybe half of those miles off road. If they suited you before I would try them (on) again

Ghosts are definitely neutral shoes. RevB- price of shoes has rocketed over the last few years. 😭 |

Go for a hybrid that works well on both surfaces, eg Hoka Challenger, Saucony Ride TR, etc |

I'm a bad advisor in this topic as I'll wear any shoes for any surface! Unless it's very steep angled grass and mud or snow or other specific surface requiring grip, then I wouldn't worry either way. For undulating trail with gravel type surface, I don't think you need trail shoes, road are fine. And I wear trail shoes all the time, including for pavements! Rubbish advice-free comment. I'd also suggest a hybrid. For one even some hybrids are terrible in the mud never mind road shoes. Inov-8 parkclaw maybe? But that's because I'm biased and well used towards inov-8 personally. Anyway fwiw: inov8.com |

If you're neutral then trailes with a decent cushion will suffice. Most trail shoes are neutral. If you roll in or indeed out then you'll need shoes that offer support and that almost always means road. |

Oh and on probably 85-90% of the paths and trails I do in the conditions I do them in my mizuno road shoes are enough
