I have the Tikka Plus which was absolutely fine for Ridgeway last year.
Food wise, there is plenty on offer at the checkpoints every 10 miles or so - I took nuts/jelly babies with me etc but didn't touch most of them. Also they ransport your bag to the halfway point, where you can restock - I just didn't need to.
There's a hot dinner of jacket potato, beans and cheese at halfway too.
I used my Inov-8 12l bag, which I love as it has great side pockets so you don't need to keep taking your bag off to get stuff. Had problems with Inov-8 bladders though, and am currently using a camelbak in the Inov 12

Hmm, so the Tikka plus might do for Ridgeway, but I'm still entertaining the idea of doing Caesar's. I can probably only afford one headtorch so I guess I need to go for something good. But not too heavy. Choosing gadgets can be tricksy! Thanks for all the pack suggestions too.

My Tikka Plus is fine if there are no other runners around, but if there is anyone else anywhere near you who has a better one then it is useless. I've struggled on several events where the shadows cast from the torches of other runners around me have rendered me and my Tikka Plus pretty much unable to see anything at all. I basically have to stop and let *everyone* go past me before I can see enough to run again If you are only going to get one, I wouldn't get it. It's OK for camping and stuff, but personally, I don't think it is great.

TMW, the Raidlight 30l is designed to compress down to 10l and is still lighter and more comfortable than most 10l bags. I'd agree that you don;t need to fill a 30 for Ridgeway (unless you are the type of person who suffers badly in cold weather, maybe)
Anna - as you already have a lightweight torch that can be used for those occasions where yo uonly need it for an hour or two, I'd get a Myo XP for Ridgeway where you may need it for several hours on a very dark night. If you can afford it go for the one with a separate battery pack, but I decided it was an unecessary luxury and went for the battery pack on the headband.
My tikka plus is now used soley as a campsite/reading torch as I don't rate it's power output. For nearly the same weight and not much more cost, the tikka xp is a far better option.
Jen - I've got the same 12l Inov-8 bag and I like it, and now I've sorted out the bladder it's better still. However I still prefer the Raidlight just as to me it's a more comfortable, less sweaty and, IMO, I find the pockets on it better and more accessible than the 12l. Plus for Ridgeway I would have struggled with the volume of the 12l I think, but my clothes are bigger than yours!

If you're really 'ard Joe, maybe you'd be fine in that minimal kit!
Looks like I'll probably get the Myo XP. I'll try some on in a shop to decide which version to go for.
Does anyone know any shops in London that stock Raidlight or Innov8 packs so I can try 'em out?

Too Much Water
there will be people running this with a bottle belt / bumbag I expect rather than a backpack.
i think the Innov8 ones are sold in Cotswolds outdoor store, why not go to Covent Garden as there is a big cluster of outdoor shops between CG and the Strand?

Not aware of anywhere in London that stocks raidlight kit. The only place I've found it other than Likeys is the Climbers Shop in the Lakes. Inov-8s are available quite widely.

Thanks, I was planning a trip to Covent Garden on Saturday. Now, talking of the Lakes, I'm considering doing the Lakeland 50 (see www.lakeland100.com) for 2 reasons:
1. I'd like to do the Lakeland 100 next summer so it would be good to have done half the course this year. 2. It's a month before Ridgeway, so could be an ideal training run methinks.
Anyone else fancy it? I may even be able to offer accommodation as my parents have a house in Keswick.

Hello. I'm thinking of doing the Ridgeway 40 in 2010. Irrelevant to this thread, I know, but I'm just lurking as part of the "thinking about it" process
