I do have an 85 mile PB although it was nowhere near 85 miles. Which I think is the underlying problem.

Does that mean you can stop when you like and say "I've done my 85 miles now" ? :-)

I did last time. But they didn't class it as a finish :(

Ah of course I remember now. Similar thing when I logged my non finish at Kent 50, it made look like I was the winner by some margin !!

So, after doing the last couple of hours of Thames Trot in the dark, I realised that whilst my Petzl Zipka headtorch is light in wieght, it's not very light in, er, light! Anyone know of a good headtorch that actually provides enough light to run by?

I'm also looking at getting a decent running pack. My local running shop has some nifty looking OMM ones. Anyone got any recommendations?

Ptezl Myo is meant to be the best and brightest

one tip - check the moon's status for the race, the 2nd half is quite exposed so should get some decent moonlight if it's near a full moon

I use Decathlon Quechua packs myself but this is something that goes down to personal preference. I'd never buy one online in case it didn't feel right on my shoulders.

Thanks for the advice. I'll have a look at the Myo and try to find some other brands of pack to try on too.

Anna - I'm pretty sure TMW means the Myo XP which is the high power LED one (whereas I think the Myo is a bulb one). I've got one and it's fantastic, but it is also not the smallest or lightest so I only take it when I know it's going to get used more than it's carried. There's now a new version out - Myo XP-R i think - that allows you to use rechargeable batteries and gives more contro over the levels of light. And, just to make it even more complex (!) you can get both varieties with either a headband mounted battery case or one with an extended lead that you can bu on the waist or keep in the pack to lessen weight on the head and keep the batteries warm.

For events where I'm only going to need it for an hour or so at the start/end of the day I prefer the far lighter and nearly as bright Petzl Tikka XP.

Based on KinkyS' expereince, you'd probably be better advised to avoid the Petzl Tikka Plus as she felt it doesn't have enough light, especially if running with other runners with brigther torches where the shadows fom their torches are too dark for it.

Having been through last year's 12 hour overnight storm, I wouldn't rely on moonlight too much!!

In terms of packs, Raidlight seem by a large majority the most popular in ultras. My 30l one is so comfortable, full or compressed down while empty. I also have and like the inov-8 ones. OMM would be on my shortlist too, and maybe Salamon.

If you want advice and somewhere to buy them, I'd strongly recommend Likeys - likeys.com

Wow, thanks for the detailed response flanker: I'll look into all these options. Which torch would you recommend for Ridgeway then (you've done it before so maybe you'd have a wise and informed suggestion)?

Flanker - I have a Tikka Plus and it's adequate, but no more than that, as it is fairly faint even with fresh batteries in. It wasn't much use at Caesar's Camp, luckily that wasn't too dark a night.

I could possibly justify getting a new one - I need to use one for 6-8 hours through the night much like Anna I guess but mine is only for canal paths, although I would want a better one for Caesars as well.

I'd argue that 30l is too big for a singlestage ultra, but horses for courses. I wouldn't have more than 15l myself plus I believe there is loads of food at the CPs on the Ridgeway.
